Alumnae Update

Dear Ursuline Alumnae,

OUR FONDEST FAREWELL
It has come to our attention that we will have to say, ‘So long’ to two of our most cherished Ursuline Sisters who will be leaving us very shortly to retire at Ursuline’s Queen of Peace Community in Alton, Illinois: Sr. Damian Aycock and Sr. Joan Marie Aycock. From the time they were students here in the 1930s, Sr. Damian and Sr. Joan Marie have dedicated their lives to Serviam at Ursuline, New Orleans in many capacities over the years here. Their service has been invaluable and we will miss them greatly.

We would like to invite all those who wish to say, ‘Goodbye’ to Sr. Damian and Sr. Joan Marie to come for a brief visit this coming Thursday, August 28th or Friday, August 29th between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Please call the Ursuline Convent at (504) 866-1472 and leave a message there to let them know you will be coming. You may enter through the convent entrance at 2734 Nashville Avenue. The Sisters are limited in what they may take with them, but some people have already asked what they may give. If anyone does wish to bring something for them, you may bring gifts of cash or long distance telephoning gift cards.

PICTURES! ANNUAL HERB BLESSING
On Friday, August 15th we held our 12th Annual Blessing of the Herbs on the Feast of the Assumption. We began with Mass at 11:00 a.m.in the Shrine, after which we honored Sr. St. Francis Xavier Hebert with the traditional blessing over the herb garden, followed by our Sisters’ Commemoration in the Sacred Heart Courtyard. We then gathered in the cafeteria for refreshments made by some of our own alumnae as well as by Linda Franzo of Passionate Platter. Meanwhile, in the Lion’s Den, Rita Salman, Chair of The Herb Society of America Baton Rouge Unit, showed the children in attendance how-to make herbal sachets and bows with Lamb’s Ear. It was a lovely ceremony enjoyed by all. Click here to see pictures from the celebration.

SERVIAM ANNUAL FUND DRIVE
As mentioned in our previous newsletter, the dedicated Chairs of the 2008-09 Alumnae Leadership Team are currently searching for Class Captains for this year’s SAF! Packets and pledge cards will go out after Labor Day. As a Captain, you would place reminder calls and notes or e-mails to 5-10 of your classmates reminding them to turn in their ‘08-’09 pledge cards before October 1st in order to be removed from the Phon-A-Thon call list. There will be no asking for money: it’s just a reminder call. Also, you don’t necessarily need to reside locally in order to be a Captain. You may place your calls and e-mails from home if you choose!

Our goal is to get enough people on board so that we may distribute the list of classmates evenly. The more Captains we have per class will lessen the number of calls each individual will need to make. If you are able to help us out in this capacity this year, please contact the Alumnae Office as soon as possible at alumnae@ursulineneworleans.org or call 504.861.9114.

If you haven’t done so already, please mark your calendars now for the SAF Family Day Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. in the Shrine! We hope you’ll be able to attend.

Thank you,

Cara D’Antoni ‘90
