Reminder that the High School Division’s Parent-Teacher Conference is scheduled for Thursday from 3:30pm until 5:30pm. We ask that parents please keep their meeting with each teacher to five (5) minutes or less to ensure that each teacher has the opportunity to speak to all parents in attendance. Also, we ask that parents WAIT UNTIL 3:30pm before approaching a teacher for a conference. Please allow the teachers a chance to prepare their material and complete their other tasks prior to the start of Parent-Teacher Conference. Parents should NOT arrive at a teacher’s classroom at 3:05 to simply “beat the rush.” Please wait until the start of Parent-Teacher Conference at 3:30pm.

Also, any student attending this year’s Close-Up Trip is reminded that her parents must attend a MANDATORY meeting in St. Ursula’s Hall at 5:30pm (following Parent-Teacher Conference). It will be at this time that flight information will be discussed. One parent for each participating student MUST be in attendance. Participating students may attend the meeting but are not required to attend.

Lions Sit at 1 – 1 Following Two Rounds at Battle on the Bayou; With Help Could Make Final Game

Round 2  Ursuline v. Karr

Following its opening round loss to Hahnville High School, Coach Fav and the Lions returned to the Alario Center focused on picking up a win and keeping alive its outside shot at a tournament championship. However, the team had to beat Karr High School or the Lions would be eliminated from further play in the annual Thanksgiving tournament. More importantly, the U-Ball needed to win this game in order to avoid falling to 2 – 2 on the season. It has been a very long time since Ursuline Academy has been a mere .500 team. Yet, a loss would put the team in unfamiliar territory. Prior to the start of the game, it was clear that members of the team were not about ready to fall to .500. Junior Raven Lyons ‘10 was all smiles and laughs while saying, “I’m excited about today’s game. I am ready to go”. Read the rest of this entry »

10/28/08 Update from Kim Shankle, Principal

Thanks to all the parents and students who came out to help for Open house on Sunday. The day was a huge success with record numbers in attendance. We could not put on this day without the dedication, loyalty and enthusiasm of all the members of our Ursuline family. I was especially proud of our student tour guides who worked so hard preparing and did an exceptional job!  Time and time again, as our visitors came through, they commented on how wonderful, informative and impressive their guides were. Also, a special thanks goes to our parent coordinators, Tara Alley and Gina Perrin, as well as our Admissions Director, Mary Antee. Read the rest of this entry »

10/28/08 Update from John Gabriel, Principal

I have written before about the difficulty of gauging the balance between making students work hard so that they develop to their fullest potential on the one hand while not overwhelming them with too much work on the other hand. The Academy’s high school faculty has recently submitted their respective grade breakdowns to Ms. Macnamara so that she and I might be able to review the grades with teachers and better assess just how effectively we are measuring our students’ progress. As all parents prepare to meet with teachers this Thursday evening, I encourage parents and students to keep in mind the role grades play in the learning process. An ‘easy A’ is almost as detrimental to a student as is a low grade in that it fails to push a student to develop herself to her fullest potential.  Too many easy classes ultimately lead a student to a poor performance on standardized testing. We at Ursuline will continue to work hard to ensure that we push our girls without overwhelming them. Read the rest of this entry »
