A Taste of Life! Class Never Smelled So Good

biolil

In Mr. Juan’s Biology class, sophomore students created edible cells. In recent years, teachers had opted to eliminate the edible cell from the curriculum and replace the project with a inedible, longer-lasting version. However, we were excited to hear that the edible cell return. We only have one request for the sophomores….. share the wealth! Send the leftovers our way!

From the pictures, we can tell the sophomores enjoyed the project and are producing high quality work within their Biology class.

In His First Year at Ursuline, Mr. Walters Finding New Ways to Make Math Fun

wallil

Recently, students within Mr. Walters’ Algebra I (H) and Advanced Math classes participated in an Engineering assignment that had students using their minds and fundamental formulas and theories to create the tallest free standing structure. Students were given a minimal number of tools and a very small amount of time was alloted for the assignment, therefore, the students had to think quick to win this in-class competition.

They were given one small roll of tape, one box of 100 straws, and 30 minutes to work their magic.  When the time was up, the strucutre had to stand on its own for 10 seconds before measurement.  Many of the girls discoved natural principals of building structure dynamics through direct observation of their creation.  The winning team built a 7′2″ tower with the stability to stand for hours.

Our character trait for the month of October is courtesy.   The definition of courtesy is showing good manners or being polite.

game

Congratulations to the Ursuline Academy Volleyball team for its dominating 3 – 0 win over the defending state champions from Cabrini High School. From the start to the end of the best of five match, it was clear that UA was going to end up on the good side of victory. The team played with confidence and kept its composure throughout the game. With its largest fan turnout of the season, the players fed off of the positive vibes and dominated the Crescents. With tonight’s victory, UA Volleyball has now defeated two of the five defending state champions. The team will get a chance later this year to defeat its third defending champion. Congratulations to UA Volleyball!

We will ad pictures from the game during the day on Thursday.

Ursuline Academy Teams Up with Cabrini High School to Raise Thousands of Dollars for the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Ursuline Academy and Cabrini Present the Check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Ursuline Academy and Cabrini Present the Check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation

On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, Ursuline Academy and Cabrini High School joined forced to raise funds for the Susan. G. Komen Foundation and its quest to find a cure for Breast Cancer and other cancer related issues. Between the junior varsity and varsity games, a ceremony was held to public announce the amount of money raised by the two schools. This ceremony could have been conducted in three or four minutes, however, Ursuline Academy had something special planned for the evening.

Most people in attendance had no idea that tonight’s ceremony would so touching. Last year, Ursuline Academy said goodbye to long-time Athletic Director Marta Bott. Bott had battled multiple occurrences of cancer prior to passing away in December 2008. Tonight, in the first PINK WEEK since her passing, the daughters of Marta Bott took center stage and made their mother proud when they presented the check to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Prior to the game, Cabrini High School was gracious enough to allow the funds raised between the two school to be donated to the foundation in the name of Marta Bott. To see her two young daughters standing proudly holding a check for $8,000 and ready to give it to the foundation that one day will defeat the terrible disease that affected their mother brought a tear to the eye of even the strongest person.

The two sisters played a large role in the remainder of the ceremony. The youngest daughter selected the winning raffle tickets. In hands down the most touching moment of the evening, the two sisters stood side by side and delivered the opening prayer prior to the start of the varsity game. With their mom’s former players proudly looking on, the two sisters read a touching prayer. Here are a few lines from the prayer delivered by the Bott sisters:

Dear God, We come together to celebrate life.

The life of those who have shown us strength, courage, perseverance, and joy through trials.

Seniors Have One Chance to be Named Champions; Leaving No Doubt They Want to Win the Spirit Title

Class of 2010 Making All The Right Moves on Way to Spirit Championship

Class of 2010 Making All The Right Moves on Way to Spirit Championship

On September 23rd, the High School Division’s new Spirit Competition moved into its fourth event. With the PINK WEEK festivities set as the backdrop, the five classes matched each other cheer for cheer. As our totally awesome volleyball team continued its winning ways with a huge victory over Cabrini High School, the seniors were leading the way in promoting school spirit. For the third time in four events, the senior Skips were able to leave campus with their Skip banner standing side by side with the spirit trophy. Though we have a long way to go before declaring the first ever Spirit Champion, the Class of 2010 is making it really hard to vote against their chances.

In tonight’s event, students were asked to bring guests to the PINK WEEK volleyball game. Each guest that arrived, paid a $5 admission. The admission was then donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer research. Classes were awarded spirit points for each guests they brought to the game. Each guest was given a ticket and allowed to deposit the ticket into one of the five class boxes. When the final total was calculated, the senior Skips have collected 107 tickets…a truly impressive total. The Merry Mac sophomores were able to collect a total of 64 tickets. The Skips added to its lead by having 75% of its class in attendance at the game. Great Job, Skips! The junior Sioux pulled within striking distance of the senior leaders when the Sioux had 70% of its class in attendance.

Congratulations to the winners of the "Group" category in the Costume Contest.

Congratulations to the winners of the "Group" category in the Costume Contest.

The unofficial totals from Event 4 shows that roughly 62% (a conservative estimate) of the student body was in attendance at the game. If you do the math, this estimate means that 240 students took the time to come to the game and help raise money in the campaign to fund breast cancer research.

During the evening, the High School Student Council, under the leadership of Ms. Amy Calloway and E-Board President Daisy Miller ‘10, coordinated many side events to make the big PINK GAME a huge success. One of the events was a costume contest where students were asked to create the best costume using the color pink (breast cancer awareness). In the group category, Mallory Schafer ‘11, Emma Fuller ‘11, Lauren Walker ‘11, and Ms. Calloway won for their crayola crayon costume. Monica Wink ‘11 continued the Sioux success in the contest when she won for her individual costume (be sure to look for it in the gallery of pictures). Multiple members of the senior Skips won the accessories category. Winners included Meghan Mueller ‘10, Christine Butler ‘10, Bridget Brelet ‘10, Olivia Pearson ‘10, Alex Vallon ‘10, Kaitlyn Moser ‘10, and Sarah Meyer ‘10.

Throughout the evening, members of each of the five classes helped to make PINK WEEK a huge success. Our students cheered from the first play until the conclusion of the school fight song following the big win over Cabrini High School.

Ok, we have a secret………. ready? …… Event 5 starts in less than 30 hours…… ooohhhh, here we go again! Can the MBO Athletic Center withstand another ground-shaking performance by our student body? Well, we are surely going to find out. See you Friday for Event 5!

We would like to thank each student who purchased a pink ribbon from the student council. Each ribbon was sold for $ 1 and the proceeds from the sale will be included in the grand total contribution that the school will make to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Between Monday and Wednesday, the student council will show their support of cancer research while also raising money for this most important cause.

Be sure to join us on Wednesday for the Cabrini v. Ursuline volleyball game. You can purchase raffle tickets, sweet treats, and much much more to help the school make a wonderful donation to the foundation.
