Exciting! Excellent! Over the Top!
Those were just a few of the words chosen by a sample of the audience members that were in attendance for the 2nd Annual Abigail Adams’ Remember the Ladies (RTL) program. Sponsored by the History Department of Ursuline Academy New Orleans, the RTL program was founded in 2009 as a mechanism to not only increase the students’ knowledge of, but also to increase their appreciation for the thousands of women who have, no matter how large or small their contribution may have been, promoted equality and social justice within the American society. On February 3, 2010, the Class of 2011(Sioux) had the distinct honor of hosting the big event. With much anticipation surrounding their performance, the Sioux promised to deliver a top-notch performance. As we have come to learn over the past years, when the Sioux say they are going to do something, they do it…..and they do it at a level that can only be referred to as impressive.
“The Skips did a great job last year and we knew that it would be hard to follow them. We were determined to give it our best shot”, stated a member of the Sioux class. Yes, the Skips ’10 were the first class to host the RTL program and will forever be the standard of which future classes will be judged. Sometimes in life, a little motivation is all a person, or in this case a class, needs in order to be successful.
Last year, each member of the junior class portrayed a single (1) female. To give the second edition of the RTL program a twist, this year’s program required members of the class to partner up and form either a pairing or a trio. This cooperation between the class members allowed for the performances to be taken to a new level.
The big story of the evening was the success of one of the trios. Following an hour and a half of performing, the students and guests gathered in the auditorium for the post-performance award show. During this award show, a total of thirteen (13) awards were presented to the evening’s top performers. The trio of Sarah Stuckey ’11, Taylor Bewers ’11, and Anna Landry ’11 walked away from the award show having captured the most awards in a single award show. The trio’s depiction of the Andrews Sisters resulted in three (3) separate awards (Best Performance by a Trio, Most Realistic, and Overall Best Performance). The trio’s success now makes them the most successful performance in RTL history having surpassed Tyler Castillo ’10’s two awards during the original RTL program.
“I could not be more proud of the Class of 2011’s performance. I asked them to deliver big tonight, and they surpassed my expectations”, stated Mr. Brian M. Cordes, Chairperson of the History Department. “I was glad that we had multiple awards this year”, stated Cordes. The decision to increase the awards from four (4) to thirteen (13) was a recommendation made by the Class of 2010. “They (Skips) were great last year…both in their performance and attitude, and their willingness to offer advice to make sure future classes had success with the RTL”, commented Cordes. He continued, “After the performance, during the next class, we talked and I asked them to tell me what went well and what needed to be changed. I listened for as along as they wanted to talk and I took it all to heart. Because of their honesty, tonight’s performance and presentation was a success. We owe a lot to the Skips ’10 for their help”.

“I have to admit one thing and I am proud to admit that this year’s outcome and presentation of awards was the closest to date. We had to gain the insight from the mystery judges, the history teachers, and a sampling of the audience members before reaching a conclusion”, stated Cordes. He continued, “As great as the Andrews Sisters were, there were multiple groups who were right there in the voting. The Andrews Sisters won fair and square and were most deserving, but ….wow, it was competitive”.
Plans for the 3rd Annual Abigail Adams’ Remember the Ladies are already underway. Next year’s presentation will be hosted for the first time by the Merry Macs (Class of 2012). “You know you have stumbled upon an educational gem when students walk up to you and say ‘ I already know what I am going to do for my project next year”, commented Cordes.
