URSULINE SOCCER Captures the District Title; Receives First Round Bye in LHSAA Playoff and 4th Overall Ranking
Latest Report from our URSULINE SOCCER on-field reporter:
URSULINE SOCCER finished the regular season with a 1-1 draw in a friendlynon-district match at St. Martin’s Episcopal on a cold and drizzly Monday evening. UA dominated in time of possession and in creating scoring chances, but they fell behind after 24 minutes when St. Martin knocked in a goal after a corner kick when UA couldn’t clear the ball out of the ruckus in front of goal. The Lions went to half time trailing 1-0.
The second half was much like the first – lots of creativity and effort, but no scoring. Five minutes in, UA earned a penalty but failed to convert it. UA kept up the attack nonetheless, and created many more scoring chances the rest of the way. But they seemed to shoot right at the St.Martin’s keeper, who finished the game with somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 saves. Finally, mid-way through the half, Nina Horne ‘10 dribbled past the defense and blasted a shot into the top of the net to level the score. Although UA broke down the defense on several occasions in the last 20 minutes, there were no more goals. The Lions had to go away just a little disappointed after so much control and creativity failed to produce the winning goals. But ultimately, the game lacked serious playoff implications for the undefeated District 9-II champs, and many Lions were able to get into the
action in preparation for the playoffs.
