Cheerleading Try-out information 2012-2013
If you are interesting in trying out the Ursuline Middle School’s 2012-2013 cheerleading team, please read the following information CAREFULLY. You and a parent must sign the permission slip for you to try out. Turn in the permission slip to Mrs. Gremillion by Friday, April 13th.
This year try-outs will be held in the gym. We will have clinic on Tuesday, April 17 and Wednesday, April 18 (from 3:15-4:30 each day). At clinic the girls will learn a dance and a cheer for try-outs.
TRY-OUTS ARE THURSDAY, APRIL 19th, in the gym. We will begin try-outs promptly at 3:15. I will let you know what time to pick up your daughter during the week of try-outs for this day. (The number of girls trying out will determine how long try-outs will take.)
The girls will be judged by independent judges. The girls will be required to do two jumps, the cheer they learn at clinic, the dance they learn at clinic, and a tumbling pass if they have one.
The girls should wear appropriate clothing for cheerleading: tennis shoes, shorts, and a t-shirt. Girls who cheered last year are NOT allowed to wear anything that indicates they have been a cheerleader. You should wear PLAIN SHORTS AND T-SHIRTS FOR TRY-OUTS. A P.E. T-shirt is okay to wear, but nothing that says “cheerleader or cheerleading.”
NO PARENTS ARE ALLOWED INSIDE THE GYM OR GYM LOBBY DURING CLINIC OR TRY-OUTS. Your daughter will need to get dressed everyday on her own. This includes try-out day. All of the girls will wait in the gym lobby until it is their turn to go in front of the judges. I will be in the lobby with them. You should send a snack and a drink for her every day.
PLEASE BE ON TIME EVERY DAY TO PICK UP YOUR DAUGHTER. IF YOU ARE NOT OUTSIDE THE GYM AT 4:30, I WILL TAKE HER TO AFTER-CARE.
Financial Responsibility
Cheerleading is expensive. This year we will be keeping the same uniform with the two tops, one sleeveless and one long sleeve. You are more than welcome to buy a used uniform from a former cheerleader. We will be buying new ribbons, poms, shoes, and bags.
This is the approximate cost for this year:
$500.00 VARSITY: CLOTHING, SHOES, POMS, BAGS, RIBBONS, UNIFORMS, ETC. (This amount will vary for almost every single girl. It depends on what your daughter will need to replace, or if she is new. If she is new, you should be prepared to pay around $500.00 for Varsity). You will each receive an individual bill.
$150.00: CAMP
*Please be prepared to make the following payments for camp and Varsity:
APRIL 20th: YOUR FIRST PAYMENT OF $150.00 IS DUE AT OUR VARSITY FITTING. (see attached “important dates”)
TBA: YOUR NEXT PAYMENT OF $150.00 IS DUE AT OUR FIRST DAY OF CAMP.
AUGUST 13th: YOUR FINAL PAYMENT OF THE REMAINING BALANCE IS DUE. THIS IS THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. YOUR DAUGHTER MAY BRING THE CHECK TO ME.
Mandatory Dates
APRIL 17,18,19: Try-outs
APRIL 20, 3:30: Fitting with Varsity rep.
JULY 23, 24, 25, 9:00-3:00: CAMP at Louisiana Tumble and Cheer. CAMP IS MANDATORY. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR MISSING. IF YOU HAVE A VACATION SCHEDULED, YOU SHOULD NOT TRY-OUT. You will receive more details about camp if you make the team.
*We will also practice every Thursday after school from 3:15-4:30. These practices will be mandatory.
*Please keep in mind that other dates may be added to this list once school begins. Cheerleaders are required to cheer at all home volleyball games, basketball games, and other school events. We will also participate in Mardi Gras parades February 1-3 and 8-10, 2013, and the Ursuline Spaghetti Supper. I will have more information about these things once next year’s school year begins.

The students in 3rd grade are pen pals with the 3rd grade students at Ursuline Academy in Delaware. The two classes have been writing back and forth to each other this year. They have even Skyped with each other and were able to meet their pen pals face to face. The two classes have really enjoyed learning the similarities and differences between the two Ursuline schools many being that they have several boys in their class, they have different uniforms and their Serviam shield is red. Our Ursuline 3rd grade class sent a king cake to them and in return the video was sent in thanks.
The sixth grade students participated Friday, February 10, in their “World Countries Food Day”. For their Social Studies project, each student had a specific country to research, write a report, make the country’s flag and a banner. In their research, they had to also look for an ethnic dish from their country, make it and bring it in to share.
The girls had a great time tasting all the new and exciting foods.
Mardi Gras is just around the corner and here are some tips to help you and your daughter have a safe and fun Mardi Gras Season.
On Wednesday, February 1 the 7th grade students started their morning with a delicious local breakfast at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter. From there they walked to the Old Ursuline Convent and had a wonderful tour of the oldest building in the city and the beautiful church of St. Mary’s.
After the convent, the girls broke up into groups of 11 to go on a “scavenger hunt” of famous buildings and places in the French Quarter. Using clues and a map of the Quarter, they had to find the place and take a picture. The girls had a great time with this as well as their chaperones!
The groups will be working on a PowerPoint presentation for their Louisiana History and Reading classes.

The reading enrichment program was created to foster of love of reading to students in grades 3-8 while introducing them to outstanding books. Ursuline students read books chosen by a committee of Louisiana librarians and selected their favorites on voting machines provided by the Secretary of State’s Office Voter Outreach Division.

Seventy-seven Ursuline Academy 6th and 7th grade students had poems chosen for publication in the Poetic Power contest held annually by Creative Communications, a company devoted to the promotion and appreciation of student writing. The poems will be included in their anthology, “A Celebration of Poets,” due out this spring.
