On Tuesday, February 8th, the Ursuline Academy basketball program played host to district rival Pearl River inside of our MBO Athletic Center. The Lions entered tonight’s game two games shy of completing its fifthconsecutive undefeated district season. With much attention being placed on Friday’s game against SalmenHigh School, which will decided the district championship, we had to take a moment and remember that tonight’s game was equipped withall the makings of a truly special evening. On this evening, the basketball program, in association with the Ursuline Academy Athletic Department, honored the four senior members of the 2010-2011 team. Tonight, we the fans of Ursuline Academy Athletics, officially say goodbye to Danielle Dixon ‘11, Morgan Lagrue ‘11, Brennan Ferguson ‘11, and Schyler Morton ‘11. Though the team has two games remaining prior to what we hope will be a long run in the upcoming playoffs, tonight is the night known as Senior Night.

The Class of 2011's Legacy
At the end of the 2005-2006 regular season, members of Ursuline Academy Varsity Basketball stood on the court watching its long-time district rival celebrate a district playoff, tie-breaker victory. In the years prior to that season, Ursuline Academy struggled to produce a team that could remain competitive with the local talent. Frankly, there were many games where Ursuline ended up on the wrong side of victory by as much as 50-60pts. Some spectators would routinely respond, “We are not a basketball school. That is just the way it is”. What exactly did that mean? Your guess is as good as ours. Followers of Ursuline Academy believed if we could add a few talented players to the that year’s eighth grade class (Class of 2010), the once struggling program could be a state-powerhouse. Reflecting on that February evening in 2006, we recall players fighting back tears and coaches realizing that the team was “at the brink” of breaking through. It was on that night, I still clearly recall, that as a cohesive element, the team stood side by side, shoulder to shoulder, and a voice was overheard. The words remain clear, “Next year we win it (district championship) and we never give it back”.
Fast forward to September of 2006. The key players from the 2005-2006 team had returned to the court but there were new faces. The Class of 2011 had arrived. Who were these players? No one knew their names nor knew anything about them. However, by year’s end, it was clear that the Class of 2010 would play a key role in the success of Ursuline Basketball. The 2006-2007 season ended with Ursuline Basketball capturing its first district title since 1994. One of the players turned to us and said, “They better make some room up on that wall. This is not the only banner we are going to put up there“. Sure enough, this Class of 2011 would help to add three additional banners to the victory wall inside of the MBO Athletic Center. This year’s seniors have one game left and with a win on Friday, will complete a clean sweep and place its fifth banner on the wall. Amazing, two years prior to their arrival, the basketball program was ineffective. Months prior to the Class of 2011’s arrival, the team said, “Never again” and vowed to never hand over the district title. On Friday night, the team will have the opportunity to add validity to that once optimistic statement.

With Tuesday’s win over Franklinton High School within the MBO Athletic Center, our Lions remain undefeated in district play and in sole possession of first play. The team’s undefeated district play streak is now over four yeasr long.
